The Atari 8-bit computers were sold from 1979 to 1992 or so. They were far cheaper than the Apple II (and the far less popular IBM PC) and more powerful than the C64, Apple II, and PCs of the era. That made for an attractive combination that sold a significant number of machines, despite severe management problems under Warner Brothers and, later, the Tramiels.
